Abstract
Agni is a fundamental physiological concept in Ayurveda and represents the processes of digestion, transformation, assimilation and metabolism. Classical Ayurvedic literature describes Agni as essential for maintaining strength, nourishment, vitality and health. Based on its functions and sites of action, Agni is broadly described as Jatharagni, Bhutagni and Dhatvagni, representing different levels of transformation from digestion of food to tissue-level metabolism. Modern physiological interpretations have explored these concepts in relation to gastrointestinal digestion, nutrient utilization and metabolic transformation. Contemporary research further highlights the role of gut microbiota in digestion, nutrient metabolism, immune regulation and gut-brain communication. This review integrates classical Ayurvedic descriptions of Agni with contemporary perspectives on metabolism, cellular bioenergetics and gut microbiota. It proposes that Agni may be understood as a multilevel functional framework of biological transformation and metabolic homeostasis rather than being equated with any single modern physiological entity. This integrative perspective may provide a foundation for future experimental research correlating Ayurvedic assessment of Agni with objective physiological, metabolic and microbiological parameters.
