Abstract

Gara Visha is a unique concept described in Ayurveda under the branch of Agada Tantra (Ayurvedic Toxicology). Unlike natural poisons derived from plants, animals, or minerals, Gara Visha refers to artificial or composite poisons formed by the combination of various non-toxic or mildly toxic substances that gradually produce harmful effects in the body. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Gara Visha as a slow-acting poison capable of causing chronic illness, tissue degeneration, and systemic dysfunction. In the modern era, continuous exposure to environmental pollutants, food additives, pesticides, heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, and industrial chemicals has resulted in numerous chronic toxicological disorders that resemble the manifestations of Gara Visha. This article explores the classical understanding of Gara Visha, its etiopathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, and management, while correlating the concept with present-day toxicological conditions. The study highlights the relevance of Ayurvedic toxicological principles in understanding chronic low-dose toxin exposure and developing preventive and therapeutic strategies for modern health challenges.
