A Study on Women’s Contribution in Assamese Fiction with Special Reference to Lower Assam

Abstract

Assamese fiction has played a significant role in reflecting the socio-cultural transformation of society across different historical periods. Within this literary tradition, women’s contribution occupies an important position through the creation of narratives that portray social realities, gender experiences, cultural identity, and changing human relationships. The literary contributions of women writers from Lower Assam deserve focused academic attention because their works represent distinct regional experiences, linguistic diversity, social structures, and women’s perspectives rooted in local contexts.
The present study examines the contribution of women writers in Assamese fiction with special reference to Lower Assam. It explores how women authors have enriched Assamese literature through thematic innovation, characterization, depiction of women’s lived experiences, and engagement with issues such as education, patriarchy, social reform, identity, family structure, and changing socio-economic conditions. The study also attempts to understand the representation of regional consciousness and cultural expressions reflected in fictional writings emerging from Lower Assam.
The research adopts an analytical and descriptive approach based primarily on secondary sources including published novels, short stories, critical essays, literary reviews, and scholarly studies. Through textual interpretation and literary analysis, the study highlights the evolving literary voice of women and their role in expanding the scope of Assamese fiction beyond conventional boundaries. The findings indicate that women writers have contributed not only to literary development but also to creating spaces for social dialogue and cultural documentation. Their writings demonstrate an intersection between personal experiences and broader societal concerns, thereby strengthening the richness and diversity of Assamese literary discourse.
The study concludes that women’s contribution to Assamese fiction, particularly in Lower Assam, constitutes an important area of literary scholarship and offers valuable insights into regional literature, gender perspectives, and contemporary Assamese cultural studies.
