Abstract

The integration of smart system initiatives in cities is crucial for enhancing destination competitiveness and sustainability. This study examines residents' attitudes toward sustainable tourism development in smart cities, specifically focusing on Coimbatore, Kochi, and Belgaum in India. Despite the increasing global recognition of the smart tourism city concept, research gaps persist in comprehensively addressing its potential and challenges. Through a survey of residents in these three cities, this study investigates perceptions related to environmental sustainability, social costs, economic benefits, community participation, long-term planning, and visitor satisfaction. Data collection employed a structured questionnaire with a high response rate from the selected cities. The findings reveal significant variations in residents' perceptions, with Coimbatore and Belgaum showing higher ratings in environmental sustainability and perceived social costs, while Cochin rates higher in perceived economic benefits. The study underscores the importance of understanding local attitudes to formulate effective smart tourism strategies that balance urban development with sustainable tourism practices.
